How to Bleach Knots and Customize a Wig Hairline

The single biggest difference between a wig that reads as "obviously a wig" and one that looks like natural growth is what happens at the base — specifically, the knots and the hairline. Here's what that process actually involves.

Why knots need to be bleached

Each strand of hair on a lace wig is hand-tied into the lace one strand (or small group of strands) at a time, and the knot itself is naturally dark, regardless of the hair color. On dark hair this is barely noticeable, but on blonde wigs, 613 wigs or any light color, unbleached dark knots create a visible dotted line along the part and hairline.

The bleaching process

  1. A bleaching agent is applied directly to the knots on the underside of the lace, avoiding the hair itself as much as possible.
  2. The wig is left for a controlled period — over-processing weakens the knots and can cause shedding.
  3. The bleach is neutralized and rinsed, and the lace is inspected under bright light for any remaining dark spots.

What "pre-plucked" actually means

A wig straight off a machine has a hard, blunt density line at the front hairline — every strand starts at exactly the same point, which no natural hairline does. Pre plucked hairline wigs have individual hairs thinned out along the front few inches by hand, tapering the density so it fades in gradually like a natural growth pattern, and often creating small natural-looking irregularities rather than a razor-straight line.

Adding baby hair

Baby hair human hair wigs take this a step further by leaving a few very fine, short hairs along the very front edge of the hairline, styled loosely — mimicking the fine, wispy hairs most people naturally have at their perimeter. This is usually the last detail that makes a lace front wig disappear into the skin under close inspection or photos.

If you're customizing hairlines in-house rather than ordering pre-plucked units, work in small sections, pluck less than you think you need, and step back to check under different lighting — hairline plucking is much easier to do gradually than to fix after over-plucking.
